Paraguay scored two goals, only seconds apart, in extra-time to secure their first knock-out victory at the 2024 FIFA Futsal World Cup.
Afghanistan took the lead in the 15th minute of the game when Hamid Hossaini scored one on a free-kick pass. Both Afghanistan and Paraguay had their chances after that, but luck didn’t favor either of them.
Eventually, Paraguay equalized in the 30th minute courtesy of a Martinez’ deflection that went in after the Afghan goalkeeper fumbled to pick it up.
Paraguay went hard at the Afghans early in the extra-time, with Emerson Mendez putting them in the lead with a brilliant strike on a free-kick. Only a minute later, Espinoza scored on the counter attack to ensure Paraguay made it through to the last 8.
Afghanistan will head home with some amazing memories of their debut Futsal World Cup, while Paraguay will travel to Bukhara for their quarter-final against either of Thailand or France.
