Futsal AFCON 2026: Algeria Fight Back to Earn Historic First Point in 2-2 Draw With Libya

Algeria claimed a historic first point at the Futsal Africa Cup of Nations, fighting back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Libya in Rabat on Wednesday.

The tournament debutants looked dead and buried after Libya struck twice — first through a well-worked team move in the 12th minute, then on a rapid counter-attack in the 29th — to take a commanding lead at the Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex.

Algeria had earlier been given a golden chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty, but Amar Bessa could not beat the Libyan goalkeeper from the spot. Bilal Bentout also came close, dragging an effort just wide of the right-hand post.

The comeback began in the 34th minute when S. Si-Chaib pulled one back, becoming the first Algeria player ever to score at the Futsal AFCON. The equalizer arrived in the 39th minute when a direct free-kick found the net — the goal confirmed after a VAR review — sparking wild celebrations among the Algerian bench.

The point leaves Algeria on one point in Group A, level with Libya, after both sides opened with defeats — Algeria losing 4-0 to hosts Morocco and Libya going down 3-1 to Zambia.

Noureddine Benamrouche’s side must now beat Zambia in their final group match on Friday to keep their semifinal hopes alive, while Libya — the 2024 bronze medallists — face the daunting task of stopping runaway leaders Morocco, who wrapped up top spot and a semifinal place with their 7-0 thrashing of Zambia later on Wednesday evening.
